GOLF IN YSTAD & ÖSTERLEN: FOUR CLUBS AND FIVE COURSES

The four golf clubs of southeast Skåne offer well-tended, varied 18-hole courses within easy reach of each other. Combine a round of golf in Österlen with a few nights staying at local accommodation. Sjöbo Golf Club Play at a fantastic woodland course, where each hole is like its own room with walls of tall pine trees and a ceiling of blue skies. Broad fairways and challenging approach shots lead to elevated, well maintained greens. Golf Digest has described Sjöbo Golf Club as “18 rooms with a kitchenette”. Even in stormy weather, things are calm in the woodland. The broad fairways are ideal for using the driver, giving even players with a high handicap the chance to enjoy great game play. Tricky approach shots leading to elevated, well maintained greens ensure a challenge even for the best players. Ystad Golf Club Here, around the shores of the River Nybroån where the sea meets the land, the ball will always find the shortest route. The magazine SkåneGolf once wrote an article about the dream Skåne golf course, including the opening hole at Ystad Golf Club: “For many players, the fantastic Ystad course provides a shock start. It’s not particularly long, but it certainly is treacherous. Take enough of a shot to get across the water, but not so much that you end up in the water beyond.” Tomelilla Golf Club Amid the beautiful undulating landscape of Österlen lies this well-design, varied 18-hole course. The differences in height provide spectacular views, and require the player to make strategic choices. The pleasant 9-hole pay & play course is ideal for beginners. There’s also a modern hotel just 35 metres from the first tee! Eve Maltais offers delicious culinary experiences at the restaurant, with dishes that take their inspiration from around the world and their ingredients from the local surroundings. Österlen Golf Club, Österlen’s only 36-hole facility: two courses with very different characters. Lilla Vik is a park course with a seaside feel on the edge of the Baltic Sea. The newer Djupadal is an open, undulating heathland course. From the highest point you can see as far as Blekinge. There’s also an enjoyable short-hole course with six holes. This is a coastal, open heathland course with a challenging layout, set in a former orchard. Wistrand Golf offers lessons and courses, and for practising short play there’s also a charming short-hole course with six holes.

Skåne´s links courses

Links courses are coastal golf courses where the grass-covered area consists of sandy soil from the former seabed – a link between the land and the sea. Here is a list of links courses in Skåne. Today, there are more than 150 links courses in the world. Most of these can be found on the British coast. However, there are also courses with links holes along the coast of Skåne, with Falsterbo Golf Club being Sweden’s only golf course to consist exclusively of links holes. Here is a list of Skåne’s golf courses with links holes: Barsebäck Golf & Country Club is famous as a host of both the Solheim Cup and several European tours. The course is a convenient distance from Malmö. The Masters Course features a fine mixture of woodland and park holes. Falsterbo Golf Club is Sweden’s only golf course to consist exclusively of links holes. The 18-hole course features clear elements of the British tradition, and enjoys a spectacular location on the Öresund Sound in a nature reserve on the most southwesterly peninsula of Sweden. The wind, the water hazards and the ninety bunkers make for a challenging course. Falsterbo Golf Club has hosted both national and international competitions. Ljunghusen Golf Club in Malmö is on the sand, just a few metres from the waves of the Baltic Sea which roll in against the white beaches. The course can usually be played all year round, and features fast fairways and greens. One of Sweden’s toughest courses. PGA of Sweden National Links Course was designed by Kyle Phillips, one of the world’s top golf course architects. He is well-known for his ability to use the original appearance of the landscape to create courses with a classic, timeless feel from the outset. Vasatorp Golf Club in Helsingborg is open all year round, and the Tournament Course – with its inland links character – is the latest course by Arthur Hills. The course opened in 2008, and requires both skill and audacity. But that isn’t a problem, is it? Flommen Golf Club (in swedish) is situated among lakes, providing exciting consequences for players. The water and the wind are key features of the course. This unique and protected wetland area provides many natural water hazards, and the wind blowing off the Öresund Sound is almost relentless.

Skåne´s park courses

Skåne’s varied parkland is certainly impressive, and several of the region’s golf courses are set in beautiful park settings. Here are Skåne’s finest park courses. Bokskogen Golf Club It was here that Peter Hanson (two-times Ryder Cup player) started his golfing career. The old course in the beech forest is a superb park course. Just a five minute drive from Bokskogen Golf Club is PGA of Sweden National. The Lakes Course is a classic park course. Relatively small greens, a number of water hazards and large bunkers. A fantastic challenge! South of Stenshuvud National Park is Österlen Golf Club. Ystad & Österlen’s only 36-hole facility: two courses with very different characters. Lilla Vik is a park course with a seaside feel. The newer Djupadal is an open, undulating heathland course. From the highest point you can see as far as Blekinge. Mölle Golf Club in northwest Skåne enjoys an exceptionally beautiful location on Kullaberg. Some of Sweden’s fastest greens are to be found here. Can you handle it? Kristianstad Golf Club has not only one of the oldest courses but also one of the finest. The club is in beautiful Åhus, immediately south of Kristianstad, and features two 18-hole courses. Ystad Golf Club is a pearl on the sand, next to one of Skåne’s most popular beaches. Play in a wonderful combination of coastal and parkland settings.

Skåne´s woodland courses

Here are some suggestions for those who fancy a break from the coast. On a windy day, a woodland setting might be more appropriate. One advantage of Skåne’s inland courses is that you rarely have to wait. Barsebäck Golf & Country Club (in swedish), 20 minutes north of Malmö, has won praise from both Solheim Cup players and players on the Ladies’ European Tour. The Masters Course begins in shaded woodland, before opening up towards the Öresund Sound, then finally returning to the clubhouse via a beautiful natural backdrop of gnarled pines. Kristianstad Golf Club in Åhus has plenty to offer, with two 18-hole courses. The older of the two is a combined heathland and woodland course, while the newer course leads through beautiful pine forest. Perstorp Golf Club is a delightful mix of parkland and woodland course, and is gently hilly. The main challenge lies not in its length but in the characterful style of its holes. There are varied – and at time treacherous – hazards and obstacles. Wittsjö Golf Club is a beautiful woodland and parkland course, and is ideal for playing a round of golf in the company of others. The 18-hole course has many spectacular and incredibly attractive holes. For example, the 17th hole is a stunning coastal hole. Woodlands Country Club is known for its beautiful natural setting. All the holes are named after local legends. The course is a combined parkland and woodland course, with exciting water hazards.
