Although Bahrain in a liberal, tourist-friendly country visitors should take the usual precautions and be aware of Muslim countries' social norms. - Both men and women should wear modest clothing when in public. - When greeting, men should wait to be invited before shaking hands with women, especially in rural areas. - During Ramadan is not permitted to eat, drink or smoke in public during day-hours. - Same-sex relationships are legal but it's advisable to avoid public displays of affection. - Due to political tensions, travel between Bahrain and Qatar is not allowed and there's a curfew on watercourses around Bahrain from 6pm to 4am. - Tap water is not potable anywhere in Bahrain.
