Welcome to Göteborg
The Avenue, the city’s most fashionable street, the music scene and the major sporting events attract large numbers of visitors every year to ’’the face of Sweden”. The small town charm of Göteborg offers a lively entertainment and cultural scene with everything from Liseberg, the Opera and the Film festival to the Book Fair.

the city | do & see
The city
Sweden’s second largest city has a character all of its own which visitors from throughout the world quickly learn to cherish. Göteborg’s soul is to be found in its flourishing music scene and in the archipelago with its wonderful swimming bays, in all its greenery and in its trams which are still running through the city centre traffic. And of course, it lies in the city’s interest in sport with all that involves in terms of ”angles” and ”mackerels” (You don’t know what they are? Ask a Gothenburger!).
Last year’s Swedish Hockey Champions play their home matches in the Scandinavium Arena and three Swedish football league teams attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the New and Old Ullevi Stadiums.

Shipping and commerce have created the international relations which have characterised Göteborg since 1621 when Gustav II Adolf founded the town.

The choice of location was strategic as the island of Hisingen was surrounded by Norwegian and Danish land. The canals in the city bear witness to the fact that the builders were Dutch. The official languages at that time were Dutch, German, Swedish and English. When the Swedish East India Company commenced trading with China in 1731 ships returned loaded with porcelain, tea, spices and cloth.
British customs became fashionable and Göteborg took on its pet name, “Little London”, which still makes itself felt in the friendly atmosphere, the humour and the architecture.
The city’s wide boulevards and parks were constructed at the turn of the century. In 1923 Liseberg was opened and Götaplatsen was completed, at the very top of the Avenue, the city’s most fashionable street.
Two universities have turned Göteborg into a knowledge-based city, and the legacy of companies such as SKF, Volvo and the shipyards constitutes the basis of today’s industry.

The old district of Haga is like a little oasis in the heart of the city, with its pavement cafés in the summer and markets in the autumn. The next centre for shops, restaurants and entertainment is about a hundred metres from there, at Järntorget.

Do & seeIn Göteborg it is easy to enjoy the cultural amenities while simultaneously experiencing the sea, the parks and the city’s pulse. Tips: buy a Göteborg Pass which gives you free entrance to several of the best sights, and lots of other benefits.
Among other things, the Pass gives you entrance to the unique science centre, Universeum, where visitors can experience Norrland as well as the tropics, and also stroke the rays in their round pool.
The Göteborg Pass is available at Göteborg’s Tourist Information Office, in Pressbyrå kiosks, at hotels, campsites and youth hostels. www.goteborg.com

The Avenue
It attracts visitors like a magnet – Sweden’s most famous street. The Avenue is the Champs Élysées in a city of half a million inhabitants. Don’t miss out on a cup of coffee at one of the cafés, try the restaurants and bars, see the exotic plants in the Trädgårdsföreningen, enjoy the park and the shopping, and discover the entertainments on offer – everything on one single street!

Eating
Fish is recommended in Göteborg. The raw materials are excellent whether you choose a prawn sandwich in a café, a magnificent view at Heaven 23 or perfectly cooked halibut at Fond. There are two main streets – the gourmet restaurants around the Avenue and along the river, and the small restaurants in the Linné district for those who like to explore different national cuisines. Right in the middle is Viktoriagatan with Kock & Vin and Klara for those who want to be close to the night life.

Klara
With an ever changing menu Klara invites you to sample different cuisines of the world. During the day the restaurant hosts a café and in the evening you will be met by either a Lebanese, Italian or Caribbean menu, or perhaps something completely different...

Cafés
The word café feels as much part of Göteborg’s vocabulary as it does the French. ‘Fika’ - having a cup of tea or coffee – has long roots in Göteborg. As early as 1890 artists were sitting in one of Göteborg’s main cafés - Junggrens on the Avenue – an establishment which has brought the café trend into the 21st century.
Excellent places for breakfast are Le petit café in Haga or Kafé Publik on Andra Långgatan. More traditional cafés, such as
Rosenkaféet in Trädgårdsföreningen, where cakes and sandwiches are served, also have a strong foothold.

Mauritz kaffe
Coffee has been roasted and ground here since 1888 and is then served directly to standing customers. There’s not a very big selection, but home made rye bread or apple cinnamon buns are irresistible with a cup of old java while you people-watch or look at the current exhibition.
Address: Fredsgatan 2, Stop: Brunnsparken

Bönor & Bagels
Haga is a Mecca for coffee lovers and you also find superb pavement cafés on Linnégatan with views out over Göteborg’s main street for strolling. A substantial bagel filled with Philadelphia cheese and salmon revitalises you when shopping has sapped your strength.

Bonus box/After work buffet
Who started the trend? Everyone wants to take the credit for the after work buffet. A number of pubs usually have Fridays as their ”after work” day, between 17.00 and 19.00. A smörgåsbord of salads, noodles, tacos or pasta is served – all depending on culinary emphasis. It can take time to find the best buffets. Come early before the dishes are empty.

Nightlife
In Göteborg the flashy clubs are on the Avenue. Club life usually starts late, when some of the bars clear out.

Shopping
Göteborg is a good town for shopping. Walking is easy and you can find what you want within a fairly small radius. Göteborg has a diverse range of shops and goods and most of it is in the centre. When walking along Fredsgatan you can find stores such as NK, Mango, the Stadium and fashionable Solo. 5 Hot Tips
Paddan
The traditional Paddan boats have been showing people around Göteborg for decades. Börjessons restaurant and sightseeing boats are continuing last year’s success and are running a Paddan boat, decorated for Christmas, through the wintry waterways to the Christmas market in Liseberg. Christmas mulled wine and the luxurious blankets that you can wrap around yourself raise the temperature during the trip. Prices for the Christmas Paddan: 80 kronor for adults, 40 kronor for children aged between 6 and 12. The Göteborg Pass provides free entrance to Liseberg.

Junggrens Café
In the middle of the Avenue is Junggrens artists café from 1890. In the spring and summer the outdoor area functions as a sun terrace and jungle telegraph. Innumerable Swedish cultural figures have grown up on a diet of ’’Jungan’s’’ cheese rolls with poppy seeds, coconut balls and coffee. More recently their cottage cheese sandwiches have spread all over Göteborg. The influence of Junggrens’ café culture has led to just about every quarter in Göteborg having its own café.
