Dundee - Sleeping
Dundee has a more than adequate supply of affordable guesthouses, B&Bs and some basic, rather old-fashioned hotels, most of which are located along the Nethergate and the Perth Road, west of the city centre.
Fisherman’s Tavern
For those looking for somewhere with real local character, this old-time pub (dating from 1827) in Dundee’s charming seaside suburb, the former fishing village of Broughty Ferry, has cosy, modern rooms above the bar and in the building next door. Plenty of good restaurants nearby, and only about 20 minutes from the city centre.
Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa
The Apex City Quay Hotel and Spa, is part of a Scottish chain of modern hotels with other properties in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. It is Dundee’s best hotel by far, with stylish contemporary rooms equipped with widescreen TVs, DVD and walk-in power showers. There is also a spa, swimming pool and excellent restaurants. The hotel has a fine location with views of the river and the rejuvenated harbour area.
Hilton Dundee
The Hilton is Dundee’s only big-brand hotel and until the opening of the Apex was the only genuinely up-market leisure and business hotel in the city. Located within walking distance of the railway station and the city centre, overlooking the Tay and only five minutes by taxi from the airport, it is aimed mainly at the corporate traveller, with all the facilities you would expect from a major business hotel, including a pool. The Hilton is comfortable enough and service is professional, but it lacks the pizzazz of the rival Apex.
Best Western Invercarse Hotel
This comfortable hotel is less than a mile from the airport and stands in its own wooded grounds, only 10 minutes by bus from the city centre. Rooms have recently been refurbished and all bedrooms now have free WiFi access.
Premier Inn
This recently built hotel on the waterfront, opposite the station and next to Discovery Point has comfortable rooms and a good-value restaurant. Some rooms have fantastic river views. Less than five minutes’ drive from the airport, it is part of a large no-frills chain which also has several other hotels in the Dundee area.
Dundee Backpackers Hostel
This comfortable hostel has modern facilities in an attractive historic building right in the centre of town. Choice of bunk beds in multi-occupancy dorms or en-suite double or twin rooms. Facilities include a shared kitchen, games room and TV lounge and bed linen is included.
